What is Student Financial Aid?
The term "Student Financial Aid" is a catch-all phrase that refers to the different types of funding to help you pay for college. The types of student financial aid include grants, scholarships, student loans and work-study. While some types of aid might be need based such as Pell grants, student loans, work-study and many scholarships, other types of aid are merit based grants and scholarships.
To be eligible for certain types of student financial aid offered by the federal government, such as Pell grants, student loans, and work-study, you need to fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, otherwise known as FAFSA. As the term implies, this is an absolutely free application. In addition, many schools require that you file the FAFSA in order to be considered for many need based scholarships.
Although the deadline for filing the FAFSA is June 30, of the school year you are applying for, you want to be sure about your school's deadline dates for earliest financial aid consideration. Typically, colleges and universities require that you have your application in before the school year begins for which you want student aid. The deadlines are usually the end of February or Mid-March to be considered for all financial aid programs. The types of financial aid that disappear first if you miss the deadlines are those such as Pell grants, graduate student grants based on need and some school specific scholarships since these typically have deadlines of their own. You will always be able to take out student loans if you miss the deadline.
